Our Leisure Library is a Social club for adults 18+. DSAWC believes that there is a great need for continuous stimulation to over 18’s. The emphasis and focus is on socialisation, emotional development, interaction with peers and development of self-esteem.
Most of our young adults attend school until the age of 18, while in school they have a social group they belong to, friends and teachers who give colour to their lives apart from family. When they leave school many of them experience a loss. Their friends often live far away (as special schools are not fed by the surrounding areas, but learners are from all over the Western Cape) and the individual with Down syndrome often become isolated – even within a loving family, who include him/her in their activities.
Dependant on parents, siblings and caregivers for their social interaction, transport, financial support etc. this dependence becomes more apparent when they leave school and enter the big world. In some cases there is a bit of a rebellion as siblings and family members who turn 18 leave the house to go to University or college, but very often the individual with intellectual disability does not have those opportunities.
With our Leisure Library activities we create a platform where people with Down syndrome can spend time with their peers, interact socially, learn and experience new activities. This project include a monthly dance, art class, drumming group, outings to music shows, movie mornings and a camp for young adults.
As young adults with intellectual disability we would like to invite you to join us for these activities. You need to be a member, so contact our office and we will gladly assist you.
