On the first Tuesday of June 2017, Masandé the dream became a reality. Masandé means: “Let us prosper”. Masandé is not a school, not a workshop, not a skills development enterprise. We have taken the best part of these 3 learning entities and combined them to create Masandé, a space for ‘exploring possibilities’. Situated in Bellville on the grounds of Stikland Hospital, Masandé is a venture we share with Sivuyile Residential Home.
DSAWC realised that there was a need for a space where individuals over 18, who have more than one disability – one of these being an intellectual disability, are given the opportunity to refine their skills. When children are growing up and go to school they learn, acquire skills, when you have an intellectual disability coupled with a physical disability you often do not have anywhere to go after 18, you are cared for in a facility or you are looked after at home, those skills are often forgotten.
At DSAWC we believe that exploring possibilities and refining skills is an integral part of living a life of purpose. At Masandé we endeavour to create a sense of purpose and give meaning to their lives by exploring their possibilities. So we ran where angels fear to tread, gathered some young adults, stole Lee-ann a co-ordinator from our Umthi Special Unit, got our lovely OT Rose to assist with putting together a daily program. We begged, borrowed and almost stole chairs, tables, a cupboard, a heater, this and that… and Masandé is up and running. Like most things that grow from the heart we decided to start rather than wait for the right moment or the right equipment. We would improvise and make mistakes and learn from these mistakes. Masandé would be for the over 18’s what Umthi School is for the under 18’s, a place of growth, adding to a life of purpose, being human and a place to prosper.
