In 2009 we started the Umthi special unit in collaboration with the Sivuyile Residential Home at Stikland Hospital. This unit is a school for children between the ages of 3 and 18 who have multiple disabilities of which one must be intellectual. Umthi is all about your own ability and learning self-help skills that other people take for granted, e.g. feeding yourself, brushing your own teeth, cutting out a picture or getting through the day without a meltdown.
Half of our students live with their families, the other half lives at Sivuyile Residential Facility. We are currently able to accommodate 16 students at Umthi. Each student has an individual learning plan. We have an Umthi curriculum and implement this in conjunction with our weekly programme. This includes feeding times. Outings are arranged at least once a term.
We have made many mistakes in the past eight years, and hopefully we have learned from them. We have grown, and we have survived and we are stronger for it. We would not want it any other way. Our students have shown tremendous personal growth. Their triumphs in mastering the everyday things – that we do without thinking, but for them requires all their effort – gives us courage. We have laughed with them and cried with them, we have seen our learners acquiring skills simply because we believed they could and because we are not in the business of giving up. They have been given a chance, and they love it and they thrive in this safe space that we have created.
